Fresh details emerge on Alexx Ekubo’s death as colleagues, friends mourn

LAGOS—The Nigerian film industry entered a period of mourning yesterday after the death of actor Alex Ekubo, aged 40.

Ekubo died on Monday night at Evercare Hospital in Lekki, Lagos, where he had been receiving treatment for liver cancer.

Boma Akpore, former BBNaija contestant and Director of Communication for the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), confirmed the news to Vanguard yesterday and said the actor’s remains had been transferred to Ebony Vaults in Ikoyi.

Godwin Nnadiekwe, a colleague, also announced the death in an Instagram post, writing: “I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan, Alex Ekubo.”

Veteran filmmaker Lancelot Imasuen, who cast Ekubo in his first film, described the loss as “devastating and unbelievable.”

Imasuen recalled that they first met as neighbours in Surulere and that Ekubo would visit film sets every Saturday while still a student.

“That was how I gave him his first movie role that ushered him into Nollywood,” Imasuen said.

Ekubo had been largely out of the public eye and inactive on social media since December 2024, shortly after his engagement ended.

Born on 10 April 1986 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Ekubo was originally from Arochukwu in Abia State. His height, charisma and strong screen presence made him one of Nollywood’s most recognizable faces over the past decade.

In 2020, the United Nations listed him among the “Most Influential People of African Descent under 40” for his contributions to entertainment and social development across the continent.

Following the announcement of his death, tributes poured in from colleagues, celebrities, activists and fans on social media, many describing Alexx Ekubo as a talented actor, loyal friend and kind‑hearted soul.

Actress Funke Akindele expressed regret at not having the chance to see him one last time, recalling the close bond they shared and the affectionate nickname “Ore mi” he used for her.

Actor Bolanle Ninalowo prayed for strength for Ekubo’s family and loved ones, while singer Peter Okoye posted a brief tribute: “RIP.”

Veteran actor Richard Mofe‑Damijo said the actor’s death was hard to process, honoring what he called a life well lived and a legacy worth celebrating.

Actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli, who called the late actor her “bestie,” said she was devastated, recalling plans they had made together and wondering how to move forward without him.

Media entrepreneur and EbonyLife Group CEO Mo Abudu remembered that Ekubo used to call her “Mum” and lamented an unanswered message, describing him as “loving, real, kind and always respectful.”

Actress Kate Henshaw recalled the support Ekubo offered after her mother’s death, noting that she would not have the chance to repay his kindness.

Several colleagues noted that Ekubo often reassured friends about his well‑being despite concerns over his recent absence from public view.

Actress Yvonne Jegede said she found it difficult to accept his loss, remembering that he repeatedly told her he was fine whenever she checked on him.

Actor Kunle Remi described the loss as painful, while actress Ruth Kadiri said she had feared the day would come even though she regularly checked on him.

Human‑rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore called Ekubo a “rare talent,” recalling a film performance that left a lasting impression on him and praising the actor’s effortless screen presence.

Broadcaster Oseni Rufai also joined the mourning, writing briefly: “Rest well Alex.”
