NEMA mobilises for arrival of evacuees from South Africa

By Joseph Erunke, Abuja

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has set up full reception arrangements for Nigerian citizens being evacuated from the Republic of South Africa. The agency’s response team has been dispatched to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, where they will coordinate with other government bodies to welcome and support the returnees.

According to NEMA, the first group of evacuees will leave O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday night and is expected to arrive in Lagos early on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

The activation of the reception framework demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safe return, welfare, and reintegration of Nigerians coming back from South Africa. Officials noted that logistics and support systems have been arranged to facilitate a smooth arrival process at the airport.

This move follows ongoing efforts by authorities to assist Nigerians who have been compelled to leave the country under difficult circumstances.
