The Federation of Ahlus-Sunnah Organizations in Nigeria (FASON) has stated that Islam has no connection with terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, or any other criminal activity.
According to the group, anyone who follows the teachings and principles of Islam will not engage in criminal acts against individuals, groups, or communities.
National Amir Sheikh Tajudeen Abdul‑Kareem (Baba Lagbeni) delivered these remarks during a press conference in Ibadan. The event was attended by Deputy National Amir Alhaji Salisu Abdullahi, Amir of the Universal Muslim Brotherhood Alhaji Abdulateef Olaniyan, and Chairman of the Sharia Panel in Oyo State Sheikh Abdullahi Adedeji.
Abdul‑Kareem said the conference was necessary after the recent abduction of 39 students and seven teachers in Oyo State and in response to negative comments made by some individuals and groups about Islam and Muslims across the country. He maintained that all acts committed by bandits, terrorists, or other groups have no basis in Islam.
Quoting Qur’an 5:23, he warned that those who link Islam with terrorism and other vices are enemies of Islam and Muslims.
He urged the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed, state governors, and security agencies to immediately curb insecurity nationwide.
Abdul‑Kareem also revealed that FASON members have been praying for the release of the 39 students and seven teachers kidnapped in Oriire local government area of Oyo State last month, condemning the abduction.
He called on governments to enact laws and policies that improve people’s living conditions.
“This press conference focuses on the current issues in the country, especially the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State. It also reflects our resolve to pray for the successful release of those in captivity. We have been praying for over a week and will continue until they are freed. We pray for the country to overcome these challenges. We do not want war in Nigeria or elsewhere,” he said.
“Bandits should stop their activities. It is better for them to cease because there is no reward here or in heaven. We want the federal, state, and local governments to treat security issues seriously. Do not use the banditry problem to create further issues in Oyo State.”
“Do not attribute violence or banditry to Islam or Muslims. People must understand that Islam has no link with terrorism or kidnapping. We also advise governments at all levels to do what is necessary for the people. Actions that improve the lives of the people should be taken.”
“Those who cause trouble should know that it is wrong. Whoever kills people unjustly should be punished. That is the judgment under Islamic injunction. The government should enforce order, and the people should be careful. Do not kill people unjustly. Those who foment trouble are not Muslims. A good Muslim will not kill a fellow human, just as a good Christian will not kill unjustly.”
“There are people who want to destroy the image of Islam and Muslims, but they will not succeed. We must all work together for peace and harmony. A person who believes in Islam will not kill his fellow human.”
“Bandits should fear God and desist from criminal activities because they are wrong. Politicians should recognize that this is a political season and not mix politics with religion, as they are different.”
