Mexico kick off World Cup opening match against South Africa

Mexico, one of the co‑hosts of the 2026 World Cup, opened the tournament with a match against South Africa at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Thursday.

Prior to the kickoff, an audience of 80,000 was entertained by Colombian singer Shakira and a lineup of other performers during the opening ceremony.
