Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, who governed the country for nearly 37 years before being killed by Israeli and US airstrikes on February 28, will be buried on July 9, state television reported on Saturday.
The burial, to take place in his hometown of Mashhad in the northeast, was originally scheduled for March but was postponed because of the war. It will follow three days of funeral ceremonies in Tehran that begin on July 4, and another ceremony in Qom on July 7, the report said.
July 4, the start of the national funeral, coincides with the United States’ Independence Day, which this year marks its 250th anniversary.
Ali Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, became supreme leader in early March, the third person to hold the position since the Islamic Republic was founded in 1979.
Mojtaba Khamenei, who was wounded in the strikes that killed his father and many other officials, has not appeared publicly since his appointment and only communicates through statements attributed to him.
