Kai Havertz has reportedly responded to Gary Lineker’s claims of the current German side being one of the weakest in the nation’s history.
Lineker, who won the golden boot in the 1986 World Cup was critical of Germany when he was discussing their prospects of winning this year’s Mundial.
Lineker Blasts Germany Squad
The former England striker stated that he thinks this is “one of the weakest” German sides he has ever seen in a recent interview with L’Equipe as reported by Bavarian News Network.
Lineker went so far as to say that if they were to play France in the round of 16, Les Bleus would make it to the quarterfinals “without any problem”.
“I think that this is one of the weakest Germany sides I’ve ever seen. France should reach the quarter-finals without any trouble.
“Germany are living off their past. Just remember that they didn’t even make it out of the group stage at the last two World Cups. So I think you can all sleep easy.”
Havertz Responds To Lineker’s Criticism
According to Goal, Havertz quickly dismissed the outside buzz during a press conference prior to the Round of 32 matchup with Paraguay.
“Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I didn’t even notice it myself,” the 27-year-old stated. “Of course, during a tournament like this, a lot of people start talking about you. But I don’t think anyone in the squad pays much attention to it.”
The Arsenal striker pointed out that the team is already accustomed to dealing with criticism from their own fans and local media.
“We already have plenty of experts in our own country – if people in other countries start as well, at some point enough is enough,” he added, before buttressing: “It’s always easy to criticise us from the outside. But I really couldn’t care less.”
