Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State announced that the state will begin paying rural allowances to doctors assigned to rural communities.

The governor said the allowances will be linked to monthly performance and attendance audits.

He made the statement during the commissioning of a Primary Health Centre operational base in Oron Local Government Area on Tuesday.

Eno also revealed that the Ibom International Hospital will officially open in June, calling it one of the best healthcare institutions in the country.

“Plans are underway to commence the payment of rural allowances to doctors posted to rural communities. You should note that the allowances would be tied to monthly performance and attendance audits,” he said.

While thanking the public for their support of him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, especially during the recently concluded All Progressives Congress primary elections, the governor pledged to do more for the people, saying, “The reward for good work is more work, and by the grace of God, we will continue to put in our best to serve you.”

Speaking earlier about the newly commissioned health facility, Commissioner for Health Dr. Ekem Emmanuel explained that the project extends beyond the visible main structure. He noted that the operational base also includes an administrative complex and residential accommodation for healthcare personnel to enable round‑the‑clock services.

The commissioner added that the state government will begin distributing 3.9 million free insecticide‑treated malaria nets from June 1 to June 30. He also mentioned that over 3,500 Akwa Ibomites have already been trained and engaged for the distribution effort.
