On Friday, users worldwide reported difficulties accessing Facebook and Instagram, with thousands experiencing login failures, loading problems and other service disruptions. The issue appeared to affect multiple Meta-owned services simultaneously.
Outage‑tracking site Downdetector recorded a surge in complaints for Facebook, Instagram and Messenger as the problem spread across several countries. The site displayed alerts stating: “User reports show possible problems with Facebook” and “User reports show possible problems with Instagram,” reflecting a sharp rise in user complaints.
Downdetector described Facebook as a social networking platform that lets users share posts, photos and videos, while Instagram was identified as Meta’s photo and video‑sharing service featuring Reels, Stories, direct messaging and live‑streaming.
During the outage, users reported being unexpectedly logged out, encountering error messages and struggling to reload feeds or access core features on both platforms. The disruption also affected Facebook Messenger and some Meta business tools.
Reuters reported that during the peak of the disruption, more than 62,000 complaints were logged for Facebook and over 8,000 for Instagram. The actual number of affected users may have been higher, as Downdetector relies on user‑submitted reports.
Meta acknowledged the issue through its communications director, Andy Stone, who posted on X: “We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it.”
The outage prompted reactions across rival social media platforms, where users shared screenshots of failed login attempts and error messages while seeking confirmation that the problem was not isolated to their accounts.
This incident follows a series of recent outages that have affected Meta’s suite of applications. At the time of reporting, the company had not disclosed the cause of Friday’s incident.
Engineers continued to monitor the situation and work toward restoring full service on Facebook, Instagram and other affected Meta platforms.
