Discussions about deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in Nigerian businesses, particularly SMEs, have traditionally centered on high‑level innovation.

However, many Nigerian SMEs prioritize cost management and seek sustainable growth amid a challenging economic climate.

In a conversation with THISDAY, Zoho Nigeria’s Country Head, Mr. Kehinde Ogundare, explained that this differing perspective accounts for why the global AI dialogue—often premised on stable infrastructure, ample capital and abundant technical talent—rarely addresses the realities confronting Nigerian SMEs.

Ogundare stressed that for AI to genuinely aid Nigeria’s development, it must be tailored to the everyday realities of the local business environment.

He outlined three strategic shifts essential for meaningful adoption: moving beyond capital expenditures and adopting affordable, subscription‑based models that enable SMEs to scale without heavy upfront costs.
