The Federal Government announced that Nigeria’s Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, slated for launch this year, is expected to transform commerce, enhance security, and cut delivery costs across the country.

At the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System workshop in Abuja, Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, described the project as essential national infrastructure that tackles Nigeria’s long‑standing problem of inadequate addressing.

He stated: “You can’t really get many things done without a digital postcode system, and this determines whether crimes are solved at the right time, where threats are contained, and whether people’s lives are saved or not. “What we’re here to introduce is not just a policy. For us at the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, this is foundational and core to what we’re building.”

He added that each building in Nigeria will receive a unique alphanumeric code, allowing precise location identification, better service delivery, and support for the nation’s digital transformation.

Postmaster General and CEO of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Tola Odeyemi, also spoke, saying the system would mitigate large losses caused by inaccurate addresses while safeguarding data privacy.

“Right now, in Nigeria, the cost of misdeliveries is anywhere from N50 billion to N80 billion because people are just running around not knowing where to deliver,” she said.

She added that the digital postcode system would enhance routing, delivery pricing, and logistics planning by providing more accurate location data.

She also assured Nigerians that adequate safeguards are in place to protect personal information, emphasizing that access to address data would be tightly controlled.
