Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has dismissed concerns that artificial intelligence will render humans obsolete, contending that the technology will instead raise demand for labor and generate new opportunities.
At the VivaTech conference in Paris, Bezos countered warnings from experts and policymakers who fear AI could cause extensive job losses, asserting that the technology would eliminate growth barriers and ultimately increase the demand for human labor.
“I know there’s a lot of concern that many people, including many intelligent individuals, have that AI will make humans redundant and so on,” Bezos said.
“I totally disagree with that point of view. I believe, in fact, that AI will create a labor shortage.”
Bezos offered an optimistic view of AI’s societal role, noting that people are often limited not by a lack of ideas but by constraints that technology can help overcome.
The billionaire entrepreneur was discussing his latest AI venture, Prometheus, which seeks to accelerate physical manufacturing—a sector that is becoming increasingly automated.
His remarks contrast with concerns voiced by several political and technology leaders. Former British prime minister Rishi Sunak, who now advises Microsoft and AI company Anthropic, recently stated that artificial intelligence is already influencing employment prospects for young people.
In Britain, the Trades Union Congress has warned that AI could repeat “the disaster of deindustrialisation”, with jobs being “degraded or displaced” while shareholders reap the benefits. Beyond artificial intelligence, Bezos used his appearance at Europe’s largest technology exhibition to discuss the future of space exploration.
He argued that the challenge to humanity’s expansion into space is not a lack of demand but limited access, describing the sector as “supply constrained, not demand constrained.”
