The Zamfara State Police Command says it has recorded another breakthrough in its ongoing operations against banditry and other violent crimes in the state.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, the Command said operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU), led by CSP Usman Halilu Modibbo, the Divisional Police Officer of Bukkuyum Division, carried out a coordinated anti-banditry operation that resulted in the neutralisation of a suspected bandit leader and the arrest of three suspects.
According to the statement, the operation was conducted on June 9, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m., following credible intelligence that armed bandits were sighted around the outskirts of Birisawa in Gummi Local Government Area.
“Upon arrival at the location, the police team encountered the armed criminals and engaged them in a fierce gun duel,” the statement said.
During the encounter, the leader of the gang was killed, while three suspects were arrested. Several other members of the gang reportedly escaped into a nearby forest with gunshot injuries.
The police further disclosed that the operatives later destroyed the bandits’ camp and recovered five motorcycles and three firearms.
The Command said the operation is part of sustained efforts to deny criminal groups safe havens used for planning and launching attacks.
It added that efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The Zamfara State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying operations against criminal elements and ensuring the safety and security of residents across the state.
