Zamfara launches tree‑planting program to curb desert encroachment

The Zamfara state government yesterday launched a tree‑planting campaign aimed at countering desert encroachment, flooding, and other environmental challenges across the state.

Commissioner of Education Abdulmalik Gajam inaugurated the initiative, which is a partnership between the Greener Space Foundation Tree‑Planting Initiative and the education ministry, at Government Day Secondary School in Janyau, Gusau, the state capital.

He said, “As part of the exercise, I planted the first trees to kick‑start this important initiative, which is aimed at combating desert encroachment, restoring our ecosystem, and creating greener, healthier learning environments for our students.”

The initiative was launched under the theme, “Restoring Ecosystems, Building Greener Communities.”

“This initiative reflects our shared commitment to tackling the effects of climate change while transforming our schools into environmentally friendly spaces that provide shade, cleaner air, and a more conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning,” the commissioner said.

Mr Gajam added, “Environmental sustainability is a collective responsibility, and I commend the Greener Space Foundation for partnering with the ministry on this noble cause.”

“Together, we are investing not only in the future of our environment but also in the well‑being and education of the next generation,” he said.

The official concluded, “We remain committed to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable development and strengthen our education sector for a brighter and greener Zamfara.”
