Mohamed Salah coolly tucked away a panenka penalty as Egypt beat Australia to clinch their first win in a World Cup knockout match, in their round of 32 match on Friday.

The game was decided via penalty shootout with Hossam Abdelmaguid scoring the deciding kick as Egypt made history by beating Australia 4-2 in a shootout to reach the World Cup last 16.

A tense affair in which Egypt and captain Mohamed Salah wasted the better chances had ended 1-1 after 120 minutes in Texas.

Emam Ashour scored in the 13th minute for Egypt, before teammate Mohamed Hany became the first player with two own-goals in the same World Cup tournament, allowing Australia to draw level.

The Pharoahs will face either Argentina or Cape Verde in the last 16.
