ASABA—Delta State Police Command operatives have detained a woman accused of abducting two infants in separate incidents in Ughelli, Delta State.

SP Bright Edafe, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, announced the arrest in a video posted on social media. He said the suspect, identified as Joy, was taken into custody after allegedly removing the children from their caregivers.

Edafe explained that in one case, a four‑month‑old baby was taken when the suspect approached the child’s mother under the pretext of buying groundnuts. The suspect reportedly distracted the caregivers and left with the infant, prompting a family search.

He added that in a prior incident, the suspect had befriended a young mother who sold tickets by the roadside. During a visit, the suspect offered to help carry the woman’s baby and then disappeared with the child.

The police spokesperson said the arrest followed investigations into the incidents.

In a statement to police, Joy reportedly claimed she had faced family difficulties related to childbirth and had recently lost a set of twins shortly after delivery. She allegedly told investigators that she took the children because she was struggling to explain the loss of her own babies to her husband and relatives before a planned child dedication ceremony.

Police said investigations are ongoing and that efforts are underway to reunite the children with their families and complete the necessary legal proceedings.
