Nigerian Afrobeats singer Ayodeji Balogun, better known as Wizkid, has become the first African artist to amass 11 billion streams on Spotify, adding another landmark to his international music career.
The achievement was announced on Tuesday by music data handle ChaftsAfrica on X, formerly Twitter, which listed him as the first African artist to reach the milestone.
The post read: “First African artists to reach major Spotify milestones:
“1 billion — Wizkid, 2 billion — Wizkid,
3 billion — Wizkid, 4 billion — Wizkid,
5 billion — Wizkid, 6 billion — Wizkid,
7 billion — Wizkid, 8 billion — Wizkid,
9 billion — Wizkid, 10 billion — Wizkid,
11 billion — Wizkid.”
This milestone followed the release of Wizkid’s collaboration with DJ Tunez, “State of Mind,” on 15 May, which garnered more than 685,000 Spotify streams worldwide in its first day.
Earlier in January, the artist, affectionately called ‘Big Wiz’ by his fans and industry peers, became the first African musician to reach 10 billion streams on Spotify.
Industry insiders and fans have described the record as a significant moment for African music on the global stage.
