Wike vows ADC and Atiku will not secure 10% of the vote in Rivers in 2027.

Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, declared that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), will not secure 10 % of the total votes in Rivers State in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.

Wike also stated that no candidate from any other party will win the governorship election in 2027, except the candidate chosen by the state’s Rainbow Coalition.

The former governor addressed the coalition’s candidates during a luncheon held on Saturday in honour of the Rainbow Coalition’s 2027 general election slate.

The coalition in Rivers State includes members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the Action Alliance (AA) and the Labour Party (LP).

Wike said the coalition will select the next governor from the four parties represented, noting that it has not yet been decided that Ogundu Kingsley Chinda will automatically become the governor.

He added that the ADC and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have never participated in a state election before. He warned that if Atiku were to receive 11 % of the vote in Rivers State, it would indicate that the coalition had not worked hard enough.

Wike remarked, “ADC and NDC have not run elections before. They do not understand elections; they only understand defection. This is the time they will see elections in practice. They will gain experience and see what elections entail, starting with Rivers State.”

He continued, “It is not enough to appear on TV and say ‘President, we love you.’ Commitment is shown by the number of votes you can deliver to win an election, not by visiting him in Lagos.”

“In 2023, Atiku Abubakar never received 10 % in Rivers State. It would be disheartening if he were to get 11 % in the next election,” Wike said.

“If he obtains 10 %—a figure he did not reach in 2023—it would mean he has improved. We will ensure that ADC does not achieve 10 % here. A person who is not ready to work but only ready when food is ready is not suitable for this state. Hard work is essential.”

“We won elections in this state despite intimidation. Now there is no intimidation,” he added.

Wike praised state lawmakers for standing firm against lawlessness, highlighting Speaker of the House Hon. Martin Amaewhule and others who protected democracy in the state.

He said, “The history of this state would be incomplete without you, Martin Amaewhule, and your colleagues. You stood by the truth and defended democracy. Without you, it would have been difficult for us to be here today.”
