Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has explained why the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja should be entitled to three senators, the same number as every other Nigerian state.
Speaking at a grassroots mobilization event, Yesufu noted that, by population, the FCT exceeds ten states, and by land area, it is larger than eight states.
She argued that there is no reason the FCT cannot have three senators and at least six members of the House of Representatives.
“The FCT has passed the stage where we have to struggle for one Senator. FCT should have three senators. It will be for the betterment of Abuja as a whole,” she said.
“With this, the good people of Abuja will have more representatives and their voices will be heard. Instead of one person, you will have three people speaking at the red chamber of the National Assembly for the FCT people.”
“This is one of the things I will push for as a Senator. It’s not going to be easy but it’s doable,” she added.
The Daily Post notes that Yesufu is running for the FCT senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
