French media reports explain that the goggles protect players from champagne spray, which can irritate the eyes, and from flying corks that may be launched with significant force during celebrations.

The practice has its origins in American sports. It is believed to have begun in baseball when former player Bobby Ojeda wore swimming goggles during the 1986 World Series celebration of the New York Mets. The custom later spread to other sports, including the NBA, women’s football and Major League Soccer.
