Chimaobi Atu, the member of the National Assembly for Enugu North/Enugu South Federal Constituency, explained why the National Assembly approves loan requests for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He said lawmakers are responding to the expectations of their constituents.
Atu noted that constituents exert significant pressure on their representatives to deliver improvements in social welfare, infrastructure and other public services, even though such responsibilities primarily fall under the executive branch of government.
He added that legislators are constitutionally tasked with lawmaking and oversight, but are often compelled to support executive requests that could translate into development projects for their constituencies.
“Atu made the statements during a media briefing where he presented his three‑year stewardship report,” the article reports. “My personal challenge is how we can do good for the people. Motions and bills are my primary legislative assignment. The National Assembly’s approval of loans for the Tinubu administration is to provide funds to resolve problems affecting Nigerians,” he said.
Atu highlighted key interventions in education, saying he has awarded about 800 scholarships to students in his constituency and supported candidates for NECO and WAEC examinations.
He added that laboratory facilities at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology have been upgraded, and science laboratories in secondary schools across the constituency were also improved. Basic laboratory facilities were installed in several primary schools, including Coal Camp Primary School, one of the oldest in Enugu.
The lawmaker further disclosed that Federal Government College, Enugu, also benefited from intervention projects.
On youth development, Atu said 150 youths were trained in chemical production, while over 200 others received training in artificial intelligence to align with emerging global technological trends. He added that beneficiaries were also supported with empowerment tools after training.
