Why I celebrate when people get divorced – Bovi

By Mary Agbabiaka

Stand‑up comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has publicly stated that he supports divorce and even celebrates it when couples separate, arguing that ending an unhappy marriage can bring relief to both parties.

During a recent episode of The Morayo Show, Bovi explained that divorce is preferable to remaining in a toxic relationship where one or both partners feel emotionally suffocated.

He said, “I celebrate when people get divorced because I feel it means one or both people were not breathing well in the marriage. I will not suffer anybody, nor will I want anybody to suffer me.”

The comedian clarified that his support for divorce does not imply that marriage is easy, noting that he has encountered challenges throughout his 17‑year marriage.

“That is not to say my marriage has been easy for 17 years. It has not. I got married at 29. I have been providing for 17 years nonstop.”

Bovi also addressed the traditional expectation that men should provide for their families, while urging that women pursue their ambitions and achieve financial independence.

“If a woman’s passion drives her to provide, her contributions should be recognised and respected.”
