Why I allow my mother manage my finances – Hakimi

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi has clarified why his mother has managed his finances since he was a teenager, insisting the arrangement had nothing to do with his marriage or widely publicised divorce from actress Hiba Abouk in 2023.

The Morocco international said the decision was made long before he got married because he started earning significant sums from football at a young age and was not equipped to handle his finances.

“Since I was young I earned much money from football but I couldn’t manage it. So my mother managed all that,” Hakimi said in a recent interview.

He revealed that he still relies on his mother, Saida Mouh, when making major financial decisions, including purchasing property and cars.

“I always take her opinion about money when I buy a house or a car or when I earn a lot of money,” he said, adding that his family later agreed his mother should stop working to focus entirely on managing his finances.

Hakimi dismissed suggestions that placing his assets under his mother’s control was a strategy to shield his wealth during his marriage or divorce.

“No, this has nothing to do with marriage, because as I said, it was always that way since childhood,” he said.

Explaining how the arrangement began, the 26-year-old added: “Even when you are 18 years old, you can’t use your bank account, so my mother controlled everything.”

He described his mother as “the manager of the house,” saying, “we used to tell her everything, so she was responsible for all this.”

Hakimi married Spanish-Tunisian actress Hiba Abouk in February 2020 before the couple separated in 2023.

Their divorce attracted widespread attention after reports claimed Abouk had sought half of the footballer’s fortune, only to discover that his salary, investments and properties were registered in his mother’s name.

The story gained further traction on social media, with viral posts alleging that a French court ruled Hakimi owned no assets and that his ex-wife received nothing from the settlement.

However, those claims were never verified. A fact-check found no court records supporting the reports, while Hakimi’s legal representatives did not comment on the matter at the time.
