Since the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930, dozens of nations have earned the right to compete on football’s biggest stage. While some have dominated particular eras and others have struggled to return after memorable campaigns, only a single country has maintained an unbroken presence at every edition of the tournament.
Changes in qualification formats, wars, political disputes, and surprising eliminations have prevented even the most storied footballing nations from keeping a perfect attendance record. Yet a select few have consistently secured a berth in each World Cup.
1. Brazil
Brazil is the sole nation to have participated in every FIFA World Cup since 1930. The five-time world champions have also secured the most titles in the competition’s history, winning in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. Legendary players such as Pelé, Romário, Ronaldo Nazário, Ronaldinho, Kaká, and Neymar have all represented the Seleção on the world stage.
Brazil’s consistency is unmatched; the South American powerhouse has qualified for every tournament despite the fierce competition within CONMEBOL qualifiers.
Countries That Nearly Achieved the Feat
Several football powerhouses approached an unbroken record before ultimately missing a World Cup.
Germany
Germany has appeared in almost every World Cup but did not participate in the 1930 tournament and was banned from the 1950 edition following World War II. Despite those absences, Germany remains one of the most successful nations in World Cup history, with four titles.
Italy
Italy missed the inaugural 1930 World Cup and, more recently, failed to qualify for the 2018, 2022, and 2026 tournaments despite being a four‑time champion. Those qualification failures were among the biggest shocks in football history.
Argentina
Argentina skipped the 1938, 1950, and 1954 tournaments due to political and administrative reasons. Since then, the nation has become a dominant force, winning the World Cup in 1978, 1986, and 2022.
Spain
Spain missed several early World Cups and only became a regular participant in later decades. The country lifted its first World Cup trophy in 2010 in South Africa.
