Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore reportedly collapsed and was taken to a hospital after a clash with Nigerian police during a Democracy Day protest at Unity Fountain in Abuja.

Witnesses say Sowore fell after police moved to disperse protesters who had gathered to voice concerns over insecurity, economic hardship and what they called poor governance.

The protest, which drew scores of activists and civil society groups, was disrupted when security personnel released tear gas canisters in an attempt to break up the gathering.

Chaos ensued as protesters fled for safety amid tear gas clouds. In the confusion, Sowore was reportedly affected by the tear gas and lost consciousness.

Supporters and fellow activists rushed to his aid and removed him from the protest site. Sources close to the activist said he regained consciousness while being transported away in a vehicle.

After the incident, Sowore was reportedly taken to an undisclosed hospital for further examination and treatment.

The event intensified tensions at the Democracy Day protest, where demonstrators had assembled to express concerns about rising insecurity, economic challenges and governance issues in the country.
