Demola Olarewaju, a senior aide to former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar, has issued a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, claiming that the administration has deepened poverty and worsened living conditions for Nigerians.

Speaking on Vanguard’s Politics Hub, Olarewaju blamed the removal of the fuel subsidy at the start of Tinubu’s term for creating inflationary pressures, higher costs of living, and a decline in purchasing power. He said the subsidy was lifted without a full deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector, a move he argues has harmed ordinary citizens.

Olarewaju contended that the administration has failed to align macroeconomic decisions with the microeconomic realities faced by citizens, resulting in largely negative outcomes. He stated, “I think that his biggest achievement has been making Nigerians poorer, and it’s sad that, negatively, Nigerians are poorer today, and the reason we are poorer is because of the instability of the economy.”

He illustrated the impact of rising prices with an example: “You buy a crate of eggs for 6000 naira today. You go back next week to try and buy another crate of eggs: 8000 naira. The following week it is back to 7500, and then it goes to 9000. I mean, this is, this is, this is definitely a failure, but you know he is not concerned about it because I do not think that Bolatino is the one who’s greater on empathy when it comes to Nigerians. I don’t think that they feel what we feel.”

Olarewaju also criticized the administration’s performance in other key sectors. He highlighted persistent power supply issues, noting that electricity distribution remains problematic despite tariff reforms. He further raised concerns about escalating insecurity, claiming that banditry and kidnapping have spread into several regions, including parts of the South‑West.

According to Olarewaju, many Nigerians are now worse off economically than under previous administrations. He argued that inflation and rising fuel prices have eroded any gains from government reforms. He warned that without a significant shift in policy direction, economic conditions could continue to deteriorate ahead of future elections.
