San Diego police said they had “neutralized” a shooter at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday, after a large convoy of emergency vehicles surrounded the mosque complex.
Helicopter footage captured armed response teams positioned outside a building, with an unidentified individual lying in a pool of blood.
CNN reported that a security guard had been killed, according to the mosque’s official.
“The threat at the Islamic center has been neutralized,” San Diego police posted on X.
Imam Taha Hassane appeared in a video clip, stating that there were some unconfirmed casualties but that all students at the complex’s school were safe.
“We are safe. The entire school is safe. All the kids, all the staff and the teachers are safe,” he said.
“We have few casualties — not confirmed yet.
“There is no threat at this moment, but we want everyone to stay away,” he added. “Stay safe, stay at home, and make a lot of prayers.”
The San Diego Police Department had earlier described the scene as “active but contained” and noted that it had “significant resources on scene.”
Dozens of patrol cars lined the perimeter of the Islamic Center, which the mosque’s website identifies as the largest mosque in San Diego County, located in southern California.
State Governor Gavin Newsom was briefed on the incident, his press office said.
“We are grateful to the first responders on the scene working to protect the community and urge everyone to follow guidance from local authorities,” the office posted on X.
Before the situation was resolved, city mayor Todd Gloria urged residents to keep away from the area.
“I am aware of the active shooter situation at the Islamic Center of San Diego,” mayor Gloria said on X. “Emergency personnel are on scene and actively working to protect the community and secure the area.”
