US mulls new strikes on Iran – Reports

The United States is reportedly considering new military strikes against Iran, according to US media outlets on Friday.

The reports, from CBS and Axios, arrived just hours after President Donald Trump announced that he would not travel to attend his son’s wedding this weekend because of “circumstances pertaining to government” and his “love for the United States of America.”

Trump said it was “important for me to remain in Washington, D.C., at the White House during this important period of time.”

Both Axios and CBS stated that a final decision on new strikes has not yet been made.

Negotiations are reportedly ongoing, with Pakistan—acting as a mediator between the US and Iran—sending its military chief to Tehran to try to secure a deal.

The White House did not comment on the reports when AFP inquired.

CBS said that a White House spokesperson, Anna Kelly, told them that “the President has been clear about the consequences if Iran fails to make a deal.”

Earlier on Friday, the White House announced a change in Trump’s weekend plans, saying he would not travel to his New Jersey golf resort as originally scheduled but would stay in the US capital instead.

After returning from a trip to New York state where he delivered a speech on Friday, Trump declined to take questions from reporters who usually accompany him.

Axios reported—citing two unnamed sources—that Trump has become increasingly frustrated with the negotiations with Iran over the past several days.

Axios said his stance during the week had shifted from favoring diplomacy toward ordering a strike.

CBS reported, citing unnamed sources, that members of the US military and intelligence community were canceling holiday weekend plans in anticipation of possible strikes.
