Iwobi, Chukwueze join Super Eagles camp in Lisbon ahead Portugal friendly

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi and defender Christian Akpan have linked up with Nigeria’s training camp in Lisbon as preparations intensify for the international friendly against Portugal.

Iwobi arrived on Thursday to rejoin his teammates after missing Nigeria’s recent friendly against Poland, providing a timely boost to the squad ahead of the clash with the European side.

Akpan, who plays for KRC Genk, earned his first Super Eagles call-up following the withdrawal of several invited players. The defender, still relatively unknown among many Nigerian football fans, will be hoping to make his senior debut when Nigeria face Portugal.

On Friday afternoon, winger Samuel Chukwueze also arrived in camp, taking the number of players in Lisbon to 22 as preparations step up for the high-profile fixture.

Chukwueze had missed Nigeria’s recent assignments, including the Unity Cup and the friendly against Poland, following the death and burial of his mother. He is now expected to join team training later on Friday evening as he fully reintegrates with the squad.

Nigeria will face Portugal at the Estádio Municipal de Leiria next Wednesday, with head coach Éric Chelle expected to use the match as a key test ahead of upcoming international commitments.

The latest arrivals further strengthen the squad as the technical crew continues final preparations for the encounter.
