Unity Cup: Chelle Urges Nigerian Home‑Based Players to Give Her Time to Decide

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has sent a clear message to Nigerian home‑based players after his side’s 2‑0 victory over the Warriors of Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi‑final on Tuesday night.

Recall that Chelle watched a brace from Femi Azeez secure Nigeria’s win over Zimbabwe at The Valley in London.

The Malian coach had included several home‑based players from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) in his squad for the Unity Cup.

The home‑based players were Michael Atata, Aderemi Adeoye, Tosin Oyedokun, Chibueze Oputa, Obinna Igbokwe, and Elias Ochobi.

In his post‑match interview, Chelle said he needs time to work with the domestic players so they can become part of the project.

He added that he was pleased with the performances the players showed against Zimbabwe.

“I need some time to work with them [Nigeria home‑based players] and be part of the small project,” Chelle said.

“Nigeria won’t stop for that. I hate to do that, but I know the player; it’s difficult for them to be here because maybe some of them, this is their first time in Europe, so the pressure was high for them.”

“But as I said earlier, I am happy with what they showed to Nigeria,” he added.
