Unity Cup: Azeez Debuts with Brace as Super Eagles Defeat Zimbabwe 2‑0

A brace from debutant Femi Azeez gave the Super Eagles a 2-0 victory over the Warriors of Zimbabwe in the first semi‑final of the 2026 Unity Cup held in London on Tuesday.

It was the Super Eagles’ first win against Zimbabwe since a 2-0 triumph in the group stage of the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Zimbabwe have not beaten the Super Eagles since a 2-0 friendly win in 1981.

Azeez scored in each half, propelling the Super Eagles into Saturday’s final where they will meet either Jamaica or India.

The 24‑year‑old Millwall forward opened the scoring in the fifth minute, firing a low left‑foot shot past the goalkeeper after a lay‑off from Terem Moffi.

In the 63rd minute, Azeez doubled the lead from another Moffi assist. Moffi squared the ball on the left, and Azeez calmly slotted it home from close range.

Head coach Eric Chelle started four debutants – Arthur Okonkwo, Rangers of Enugu pair Chibueze Oputa and Obinna Igbokwe, and Azeez – in his lineup.

The starting XI also included Alhassan Abdullahi, Tochukwu Nnadi, Moffi, Philip Otele, Samson Tijani, Chibuike Nwaiwu and Igoh Ogbu.

Ikorodu City midfielder Aderemi Adeoye, Plymouth’s Owen Oseni and Pisa FC’s Rafiu Durosinmi all made their Super Eagles debuts against Zimbabwe.

Both teams are using the Unity Cup as preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Super Eagles are in Group L with co‑hosts Tanzania, Madagascar and Guinea‑Bissau, while Zimbabwe are drawn in Group E with DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone.
