UNIOSUN students protest after colleague's death as university clarifies circumstances

Students at Osun State University (UNIOSUN) staged a protest at the College of Law on the Ifetedo Campus, demanding better healthcare services and medical facilities across the university after the death of their colleague, Miss Grace Osunlakin.

The demonstration followed the university’s Thursday announcement of the indefinite closure of the Ifetedo Campus, which came after the death of the 400‑level Criminology and Security Studies student.

Videos shared on social media show students weeping and demonstrating on campus, alleging that a shortage of medical staff and inadequate healthcare equipment contributed to the incident.

The protesters further claimed that student deaths had occurred repeatedly, arguing that insufficient medical facilities and limited access to emergency care had played a role in prior incidents.

They urged the Osun State government and university management to prioritize student welfare and upgrade healthcare services on all campuses, contending that such actions would prevent similar tragedies.

University officials, however, dismissed the narratives as misleading and released a preliminary report outlining the events that led to her death.

In a statement issued by spokesperson Ademola Adesoji on Friday, the university said, “Grace Osunlakin successfully defended her final‑year project on June 23 before returning to her privately rented off‑campus residence, where she showed no visible signs of illness while on campus earlier that day.”
