A 400‑level Biotechnology student at Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Philip Ayomide Ogundele, has received a $950 international research grant from Sigma Xi – The Scientific Research Honor Society. The funding supports his project, “Wearable Biosensor Prototype for the Detection and Surveillance of Lassa Fever Infection in Low‑Resource Settings.”

University Public Relations Officer Ademola Adesoji said the grant will help Ogundele develop innovative disease‑monitoring tools for environments where healthcare access and diagnostic equipment are scarce.

The award represents another step for UNIOSUN in fostering research, innovation, and global academic collaboration among its students.

Sigma Xi’s Grants‑in‑Aid of Research (GIAR) program, founded in 1922, is a well‑known international initiative that supports undergraduate and postgraduate research with societal relevance.

Osun State University Vice‑Chancellor Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye welcomed the recognition, noting it reflects the university’s dedication to high‑quality education, research excellence, and student development.

He added, “This international recognition further reflects our commitment to producing graduates and scholars equipped with the capacity to address real‑life challenges through research, innovation and knowledge‑driven solutions.”

“We are proud of Philip Ayomide Ogundele for this remarkable feat, which demonstrates the immense potential of our students when provided with the right academic environment and support,” he said.

The Vice‑Chancellor also emphasized that the university will continue to strengthen initiatives that promote innovation, research, and academic excellence among its students and staff.

Ogundele’s achievement adds to UNIOSUN’s growing record of research successes and highlights the university’s expanding presence in global academic and research communities.
