Suspected diarrhoea has been reported in some hostels at the University of Lagos, with students allegedly vomiting and having diarrhoea.

The outbreak is said to be widespread in Moremi Hall, a female hostel on campus.

Reports from students on social media and checks by our reporter suggest that some students are also showing signs of fever.

A concerned parent, who sent a message to our reporter, wrote: “Please dear ones, my daughter in Moremi Hostel in Unilag just reported that a lot of the students have been vomiting and stooling for days now with high fever too. Kindly let’s elevate this so that authorities can act fast.”

Another parent who called also requested that the authorities be informed of the issue.

On Wednesday evening, the university administration issued a statement assuring the safety and welfare of the students.

The statement, signed by Adejoke Alaga‑Ibraheem, Head, Communication Unit, University of Lagos, reads: “The attention of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Management has been drawn to reports on the alleged contamination of the campus water supply within some halls of residence.”

“We wish to assure all students, staff, and members of the campus community that the matter is being treated with utmost urgency and seriousness.”

“Relevant departments have commenced a thorough assessment of the water supply system, including necessary water quality tests, to determine the accuracy of the reports and identify any potential risks.”

“Immediate interventions have been put in place to ensure that the welfare, health, and safety of all students are adequately protected.”

“We urge members of the campus community to refrain from spreading unverified information that may cause unnecessary panic. Official updates and directives regarding the situation will be communicated through the institution’s approved channels as soon as the assessment is concluded.”

“The University Management remains committed to providing a safe and conducive environment for learning and will take all necessary actions required to address any issues identified.”
