On Tuesday, students at the University of Jos (UniJos) staged a protest to demand the restoration of electricity in their hostels, where a power outage has persisted for more than a week.
Students said the lack of basic amenities has made living conditions unbearable, disrupted their studies, and affected their overall well‑being since the start of the current academic session.
During the protest, Felix Bala spoke to the crowd: “Since our resumption, we have not had power in our hostels. We were told that power was cut off. We demand immediate restoration of electricity.”
He added that the protest followed days of complaints about the absence of electricity and water. Bala said the problem began last week when students noticed no power supply or running water, and hostel facilities such as toilets remained unclean. He explained that water supply depends on electricity to power pumping machines, and that students had waited from Thursday through Monday without any improvement.
Another student, speaking anonymously, said that some off‑campus students had urged the protesters to lift the blockade so that university authorities could address the issue, but the appeal was unsuccessful.
At the time of reporting, attempts to contact the Students’ Union Government (SUG) president, Senator Younglan Talyoung, and other university officials had failed. Efforts to reach the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof Chris Piwunna, were also unsuccessful.
