United States forces shot down two Iranian drones on Thursday that were attempting to target commercial vessels moving through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to NBC News, an American official disclosed the incident on Thursday, offering no further details about the vessels involved or any damage caused.

"It appears Iran has attempted to strike commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz tonight. US forces shot down two Iranian one‑way attack drones. Traffic flow through the Strait continues," the official said.

The statement came a few hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington was close to finalising an agreement with Iran to end the war.

Trump said the agreement could be signed very soon and added that Vice President J.D. Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner would represent the United States at a potential signing ceremony in Europe.
