Two reasons Konyaspor could be the ideal destination for Chidozie Awaziem

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has found himself at a crossroads and is leaning towards a return to Turkey, Afrik Foot reports.

After suffering relegation with FC Nantes, the 40-cap Super Eagles defender is once again facing an uncertain future, with Turkish Super Lig side Konyaspor emerging as a possible destination.

For many players, dropping into Ligue 2 could be a temporary inconvenience. But for Awaziem, who is entering the latter stages of his prime and remains in contention for Nigeria’s major tournaments, the next move could define the remainder of his career.

A switch to Turkey may prove to be the perfect solution.

Two reasons Konyaspor is ideal for Chidozie Awaziem

1. A familiar environment where Awaziem has already thrived

Footballers often perform their best in environments they understand. For Awaziem, Turkey is one of those places.

The Nigerian centre-back previously enjoyed successful spells with both Caykur Rizespor and Alanyaspor, establishing himself as one of the more dependable defenders in the Turkish top flight.

Unlike a move to an unfamiliar league, joining Konyaspor would not require a lengthy adaptation period.

He understands the intensity of the Turkish game, the expectations of supporters and the tactical demands placed on defenders.

At 29, that familiarity is important. After the disappointment of Nantes’ relegation campaign, Awaziem needs stability and regular football rather than another risky move into unknown territory.

Turkey has also increasingly become a preferred destination for African players seeking to rebuild their careers.

Victor Osimhen rediscovered his best form there, while several Nigerian internationals have used the Super Lig as a platform to revive their careers and remain relevant at the international level.

For Awaziem, Konyaspor could offer precisely the same opportunity.

2. Remaining in top-flight football could preserve his Super Eagles future

Perhaps the most important factor is international football. The Super Eagles’ defensive picture is becoming increasingly competitive.

Calvin Bassey remains Nigeria’s undisputed first-choice centre-back, while players like Emmanuel Fernandez, Benjamin Fredrick, Semi Ajayi and Igoh Ogbu have become regulars of late under Eric Chelle.

Playing in Ligue 2 may not necessarily end Awaziem’s international career, but it could certainly weaken his chances of getting a call-up for major tournaments.

The Nigerian defender already possesses valuable experience and leadership qualities, but maintaining visibility at club level is crucial if he hopes to remain part of Nigeria’s plans ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

A move to Konyaspor would allow him to continue competing at top-flight level every week. That could make a significant difference when national team selections are made.

Nigeria have historically relied on players performing consistently in Europe’s major leagues, and remaining in a first division would undoubtedly strengthen Awaziem’s chances of adding to his 40 international caps.

The perfect career reset?

Relegation often forces players into difficult decisions. For Chidozie Awaziem, however, the answer may be relatively straightforward.

Nantes need to reduce their financial burden, Konyaspor require an experienced defender, and the Nigerian international needs regular football in a competitive top division.

The move appears beneficial for all parties involved. Most importantly, it could provide Awaziem with something every experienced footballer seeks after a disappointing season: a fresh start.

And with his Super Eagles ambitions still very much alive, Turkey could once again become the stage where the Nigerian defender rediscovers his best football.
