On Tuesday, former U.S. President Donald Trump said that Russia should reach a deal to end its war with Ukraine, following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 summit in France.
He noted that he had met Zelensky in the spa town of Evian‑les‑Bains, where the summit was held, and that additional discussions were scheduled later that day. The G7, a group of leading world powers, is working to increase pressure on Moscow to end the conflict that has lasted more than four years.
Trump highlighted the high casualties on both sides, describing the toll as “ridiculous.” He added, “Admit the whole thing is ridiculous. So, yeah, I’m going to do whatever I can.”
Zelensky said on Monday that he had suggested to Trump that he could meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in the United States, arguing that the Kremlin strongman might find such an offer “harder to refuse” than the earlier proposal for talks at the G7.
