Trump suggests wants Iran uranium for optics

U.S. President Donald Trump said that the pursuit of Iran’s enriched uranium is largely a matter of public relations, after Israel identified it as a key objective.

During a late‑Thursday interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, broadcast from China, Trump stated, “I just feel better if I got it, actually, but it’s — I think, it’s more for public relations than it is for anything else.” He added, “The other thing we could do is bomb it again. But I, just, I would feel better getting it and we will get it.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who, together with Trump, authorized an attack on Iran on February 28, said in a recent interview that the conflict is “not over” because the “sensitive nuclear material has to be taken out” of the country.

In June last year, Trump ordered the bombing of three major Iranian nuclear sites following a previous round of Israeli strikes. He claimed the sites were “completely obliterated,” a statement he has repeated despite the lack of confirmation from United Nations nuclear inspectors that Iran was close to building an atomic bomb.

Iran has not disclosed the location of its highly enriched uranium. Some experts believe the material could be buried deep underground, making its seizure difficult without precise intelligence.

After Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 nuclear agreement negotiated under former President Barack Obama, Iran began enriching uranium to levels near, but not at, weapons grade.
