Truck crashes into house in Niger, killing housewife and grandson

A truck collided with a house in Make, a community on the outskirts of Suleja in Niger State, on Sunday morning, killing a housewife and her 10‑year‑old grandson.

According to a source, youths blocked both the Suleja‑Minna Road and the road leading to Dikko Junction—which connects the area to the Abuja‑Kaduna highway—to protest the incident.

The truck driver had arrived in the area around 7 am from the Minna axis on his way to Kaduna when the brakes failed. He jumped out of the truck, leaving his assistant to control the vehicle.

The assistant said, “The truck rammed into the house, killing the housewife identified as Maryam Shuaibu and her 10‑year‑old grandson, while another girl from the family was injured.”

This is the fourth time a moving tanker has crashed into the same house, highlighting the poor condition of the federal highway in the area.

The youths expressed concern over the lack of compensation for victims’ families and property owners, and their blockade caused a gridlock that extended to Suleja town and neighboring communities along the Minna and Dikko road axes.

Abdullahi Shuaibu Maje, the Commissioner for Transport, led a delegation from the Niger State government and appealed to the protesters to reopen the highway around 3 pm.

The victims were buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

ACP Muhammad Sani Musa, the Police Area Commander in Suleja, confirmed the incident when contacted.
