The Nigerian naira edged higher against the United States dollar in both the official and parallel foreign‑exchange markets on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, as liquidity conditions improved and the Central Bank of Nigeria continued its market interventions.

According to data from the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the official rate moved to roughly ₦1,373 per dollar, a modest gain from the approximately ₦1,375 level recorded in the prior session.

In the parallel (black) market, the naira traded between ₦1,395 and ₦1,405 per dollar in Lagos and other key trading centres on the same day, indicating a slight strengthening relative to rates seen earlier in the week.

Analysts linked the naira’s modest appreciation to a larger supply of dollars in the official market, a decline in speculative buying, and ongoing Central Bank actions aimed at narrowing the gap between official and unofficial rates.

The difference between the NFEM official rate and the parallel market rate contracted to about ₦20–₦30 per dollar, suggesting greater stability compared with the wider spreads recorded earlier in the year.

Turnover at the NFEM window also rose, reflecting heightened activity from authorized dealers and foreign‑exchange traders as demand from importers, school‑fee payments, business transactions, and travel needs remains strong.
