President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally submitted a Constitution Alteration Bill to the Senate, aiming to create state police forces nationwide.
The bill seeks to modify specific sections of the 1999 Constitution, establishing the legal and institutional framework necessary for the creation and operation of state police forces across the federation.
This development represents a key milestone in Nigeria’s broader security reforms, strengthening the role of state governments in maintaining law and order within their territories.
Tinubu has long championed constitutional amendments that grant states greater authority over security matters. In February, he urged the National Assembly to accelerate such amendments, contending that the present security landscape demands a more decentralized strategy.
The President contends that equipping states with independent police forces would bolster efforts to curb terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities nationwide.
The bill will soon be examined by the National Assembly, where legislators will assess its provisions and the potential impact on Nigeria’s federal system and security framework.
