President Bola Tinubu expressed shock at the death of retired Major‑General Rabe Abubakar, who was reportedly in the custody of terrorists in Katsina State.
The President also declared that the government would never comply with the terrorists’ demand to release their members who are being held by security agencies.
General Abubakar, after a distinguished military career, had retired a few years earlier. He was on his way to his hometown when he was seized by the hoodlums.
President Tinubu offered his condolences to the General’s family, particularly his wife, who remains in the captors’ possession.
He also extended sympathies to the Katsina State government and the armed forces.
A statement from presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga read: “While the terrorists have committed grave acts, the President wants them to know that the government will never bow to their demand to release their members held by our security agencies.”
The spokesman added: “As I said on June 12: ‘Bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. No mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians.’”
He continued: “As Nigerians, we must stand united and be assured that the enemies of our nation shall soon be history. We will triumph over terror and continue to build a more prosperous nation.”
“General Abubakar’s death should serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents, reinforcing that we will never negotiate with them on any terms, but will treat them as the greatest enemies of our nation, who should never be spared.”
