Tinubu’s administration has destroyed democracy – Galadima

Buba Galadima, Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the New Nigeria People’s Party, claimed that the government led by President Bola Tinubu has “destroyed democracy” in Nigeria.

He also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of establishing a committee well before the electoral bill was presented to the National Assembly.

Galadima made these remarks on Saturday at the Nigeria Democratic Congress aspirants’ summit in Abuja.

Furthermore, he argued that the Electoral Act 2026 was crafted to disadvantage opposition parties.

His statement: “By the time the National Assembly deliberated and finalized the draft electoral bill, within an hour the President signed it. Did he study that bill? It means a bill was prepared before him.”

“What were the contents of that bill? One provision, relevant to this summit, states that candidates can only be selected through two methods: consensus or direct primaries.”

“The APC and its government believe that the opposition will not be able to engage in consensus.”

“If consensus is not possible, the only remaining option is direct primaries. I say, without fear of being contradicted, that no opposition party can conduct direct primaries and emerge entirely clean.”

“As I speak to you now, the NDC is the strongest political platform capable of challenging the APC and removing it from government.”

“The party cannot afford to hold primaries because they will invite disruption and we risk ending up without a candidate.”

“Therefore, it is better for us to maintain unity, remain loyal to the party and to the decisions of its elders and major stakeholders in all constituencies, so that whoever emerges as a candidate for any constituency in this country will receive our collective support.”
