Tinubu Has Not Targeted Opponents or Protesters, Aide Says, Defending President’s Democratic Record

Temitope Ajayi, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, defended the administration’s commitment to democratic freedoms on Thursday. Speaking on Vanguard’s Politics Hub, Ajayi said the government has neither curtailed civil liberties nor targeted critics. He stated, “Democracy guarantees freedom, freedom of choice, freedom of expression,” adding that “none of these freedoms have been infringed upon or trampled upon by this administration in the last three years.”

Ajayi further claimed that President Tinubu has shown tolerance for dissent and would never take actions that would emasculate or destroy democracy in the country. “Have you ever heard that the President went after anybody for abusing him every day?” Ajayi asked. He also highlighted President Tinubu’s personal history, describing him as one of the architects of Nigeria’s democracy who “went on exile for it” and “put his life on it.” According to Ajayi, the Tinubu administration is committed to enriching, expanding, and making democracy flourish.

Addressing recent public protests, Ajayi argued that the government has not used state security forces to silence dissent. He stressed that the president has never employed police or DSS operatives to harass protesters or those who insult him.
