Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has denied allegations that President Bola Tinubu vowed to forgo a second term if he could not improve Nigeria's electricity supply.

During an interview on Arise News, Onanuga said the President’s 2022 campaign remarks had been taken out of context.

He said Tinubu’s comment about electricity was conditional, not a firm pledge to abandon re‑election.

Onanuga noted that Tinubu has shown a commitment to reforming the power sector since taking office, pointing to the signing of the Electricity Act that permits states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity on their own.

He added that the government is addressing estimated billing by distributing more meters and implementing other measures to improve service delivery.

Onanuga acknowledged that electricity supply has not yet reached the administration’s target, citing long‑standing problems such as gas shortages, legacy debts to gas suppliers, and outdated transmission infrastructure.

He stressed that the Federal Government remains focused on tackling these challenges and on improving power generation and distribution nationwide.
