Super Eagles winger Nathan Tella could finally be set for his most important season yet at Bayer Leverkusen following the arrival of new coach Carles Martínez, Afrik Foot reports.
After an injury-disrupted 2025/26 campaign, the Nigerian international has been handed an early vote of confidence by the Spaniard, who told him during a private conversation: “I want to get the best out of you.”
For a player whose Leverkusen career has largely been defined by flashes of brilliance mixed with frustrating setbacks, the managerial change may have arrived at the perfect time.

1. A fresh start after the Xabi Alonso and Hjulmand era
Managerial changes often create opportunities for players who may have previously struggled for consistency, and Tella appears to be one of the biggest beneficiaries.
Under Xabi Alonso, competition for places was fierce, with Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Jonas Hofmann and Alejandro Grimaldo all occupying attacking positions.
Tella frequently found himself rotating in and out of the side, while injuries further complicated his progress.
However, Bayer Leverkusen are entering a new era. The squad has undergone significant changes this summer, and Martínez appears keen to assess every player with a clean slate.

Rather than viewing him as a squad player, Martínez may see Tella as an important piece in his rebuilding project.
For the former Southampton man, that trust could make all the difference.
2. Martínez’s communication style could suit Nathan Tella perfectly
One of the most striking aspects of Tella’s comments was his praise for Martínez’s communication.
“The coach is very vocal and provides a lot of communication. That’s what we need as a team,” the 27-year-old said in quotes revealed by Fussballeuropa.
Tella has always appeared to thrive when coaches show confidence in him.
His best spell came under Vincent Kompany at Burnley, where he felt trusted and responded with 19 goals in the Championship.

Martínez’s willingness to communicate his expectations clearly could therefore unlock another level in the Nigerian.
The Spaniard’s proactive approach also contrasts sharply with the uncertainty that surrounded Tella’s role at times last season.
Feeling wanted can often transform a player’s mentality, and early indications suggest Tella is already responding positively.
3. Increased opportunities following squad changes
Leverkusen’s attacking hierarchy may look very different next season.
Several key players from the club’s title-winning season have departed or could still leave before the transfer window closes, which naturally creates opportunities.

His pace and ability to attack spaces behind defensive lines make him an ideal weapon, particularly in counterattacks.
At 27, he is also entering what should theoretically be the peak years of his career.
Unlike younger players still developing or older players approaching decline, Tella now possesses both experience and physical maturity.
If he can remain fit, regular minutes could finally allow him to build rhythm and consistency.
His own comments reveal just how motivated he is.
“My main goal for this season is that I don’t go right back for five weeks after a good game. I want to turn my frustration and anger into positive energy.”

A strong campaign at Bayer Leverkusen would also significantly enhance Tella’s chances of reclaiming his place in Eric Chelle’s squad, having only played once under the Franco-Malian tactician.
Competition for places in Nigeria’s attack remains intense, with Samuel Chukwueze, Philip Otele, Femi Azeez, Zadok Yohanna and Yira Sor all competing for the same position.
Eric Chelle has repeatedly emphasised the importance of club form. Regular football in the Bundesliga would therefore strengthen Tella’s chances ahead of AFCON 2027 and the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
