Three dead, ten buildings burned amid violence in Kwara community.

Police in Kwara State are searching for suspects after a violent incident that killed two people and destroyed about ten buildings in Ilesha Baruba, Baruten Local Government Area.

The incident was announced by the Kwara State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire‑Adeyemi, in a statement released on 31 May 2026.

According to the statement, the violence started when an unidentified Fulani man clashed with Islamic scholar Mohammed Ilyasu. Both men were wounded with machetes.

Ilyasu was confirmed dead when he arrived at a hospital, while the other man later died while receiving treatment.

The police said that after the deaths, some youths stormed the hospital, seized the body of the deceased suspect, and set it on fire.

Another man who was passing through the area was also reportedly attacked and burned by the mob.

Police added that roughly ten buildings belonging to members of the Fulani community, including the residence of Ardo Fulani Alhaji Hassan, were razed during the attack.

The statement said that police and military officers were deployed to the area and had restored normalcy.

Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi condemned the attacks and warned against taking the law into one’s own hands.

“No individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands irrespective of the circumstances surrounding any incident,” the commissioner said.

The command said investigations were ongoing and assured residents that those responsible would be arrested and prosecuted.
