A Nigerian citizen employed as a correctional officer by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Ayodele Abiodun Afosi, was taken into custody after allegedly leaving the scene of a traffic collision.
According to authorities, law‑enforcement officers arrested Mr Afosi on Monday after he is said to have caused damage exceeding $200 in the incident and then failed to stop and provide the required information.
Following his arrest, the suspect was booked into the Walker County Jail in Texas, where he remains held on a $3,000 bond.
The detention occurs only three months after Mr Afosi began his employment as a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, putting his state job at risk.
Texas statutes mandate that drivers stop at the scene of an accident as safely as possible and furnish necessary details, including name, address, vehicle registration, insurance information and driver’s licence.
Violations can result in up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to $2,000, or both. Offenders may also face driver’s licence suspension and higher insurance premiums.
