TCN Restores Power to Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa; Repairs 330kV Kumbotso Line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has restored power to the states of Kano, Katsina and Jigawa after completing scheduled maintenance at its 330kV Kumbotso Transmission Substation.

In a statement issued yesterday, the company’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed that the substation and the affected transmission lines were successfully energized, with normal supply fully restored around 4:30 p.m.

The maintenance, previously announced by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), required a temporary shutdown of power from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to allow engineers to carry out essential work on the facility.

TCN said the work was part of its ongoing investment in strengthening the transmission grid and improving the stability of electricity supply nationwide.

After the infrastructure was restored, the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) and Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) resumed power off‑take to their franchise areas, the company added.

The restored supply now serves customers in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa, as well as Azare in Bauchi State, Nguru in Yobe State and Gazaoua in the Republic of Niger, which receives electricity through Nigeria’s transmission network.

TCN thanked customers for their patience and understanding during the outage, noting that the temporary inconvenience was necessary to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the power system.

Earlier, NISO had informed consumers that the planned outage was essential to facilitate maintenance at the Kumbotso 330kV Substation, emphasizing that the upgrade represented a critical investment in the national grid.

According to the system operator, the work was expected to increase the network’s transmission capacity, improve supply to the affected states and strengthen Nigeria’s overall power resilience.

The successful completion of the exercise and the resumption of supply bring an end to the temporary disruption experienced by consumers in the affected areas, while reinforcing ongoing efforts to improve the country’s transmission infrastructure.
