The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported that it had documented approximately 276 incidents of vandalized infrastructure between 2022 and 2025 across the country.

During a public awareness session on vandalism of TCN assets in Itori, Ewekoro, Ogun State, General Manager for the Lagos region, Engr. Adeshina Adeonipekun, said: “From 2022 to 2025, we recorded no fewer than 276 tower vandalism incidents. This year, thanks to community support and proactive staff efforts, we have reduced the number to around 40.”

He added that measures such as an annual sensitization program conducted in various locations help curb vandalism, allowing collaboration with local communities to protect the infrastructure. He noted that the Southwest region has relatively few incidents and credited the National Security Advisor and security agencies for helping apprehend offenders.

TCN’s Principal Manager, Lines, Engr. Kuye Emmanuel, added that additional safeguards are in place for transmission lines. “Besides awareness, we employ private vigilantes in each zone of the community, who receive monthly payments to protect our lines. We also offer incentives to local farmers as a form of community support and encourage them to report any vandals in the area,” he said.

The Olu of Itori, HRM Abdul Fatai Akorede Akamo, emphasized the importance of holding such awareness sessions annually.

He added, “The last awareness session in Itori took place four years ago. We commend TCN’s efforts and urge that it be conducted at least once a year.”
